Wow! One of those dress shops was my mother’s. Her (Doris McKersie’s) custom dressmaking shop was on Hall’s Lane (behind the Walper Hotel block). Women would come in with just a photograph or a crude drawing and my mother would make a pattern and create custom women’s, men’s and children’s clothes.
She only gave it up to raise five children. But she continued to make us clothes, the best Halloween
costumes in the Twin Cities and eventually the costumes
I would use as a mime artist and children’s entertainer.
Ironically, I had my studio entrance off Hall’s Lane some twenty-five years later. It was on the second floor of what was then the Arcade Building and is now The Still.
